The two mistakes of this semester

Como eres nuevo en Revista MBA, te recomendamos que te suscribas a nuestro feed RSS. No te pierdas ningún artículo: Cada uno te sorprenderá! Muchas gracias por tu visita!

Being perfect isn’t my dream but attempting it is my passion. While I opted for chill electives this semester to be as less loaded as possible I did commit two mistakes on the recommendations of my seniors.

Mistake 1

SCM Analysis and Design - The professor’s brilliance and my incompetence has made this subject a miserable experience. I am perhaps one of the biggest duds around in class like Ishaan Awasthi in Taare Zameen Par obvlivous to the happenings inside the class.

Mistake 2

Global Supply Chain Management - Another SCM, I wonder what made me so attracted towards the word SCM that I opted for another one! The corporate trainers may not be excellent but their presentations cut the deal. However, they do not share it and all I struggle with is trying to keep my eyes open in class

Gaming…it ain’t pimple faced kids anymore!

Long have I (and be honest, many of you) been harassed and degraded by parents, girlfriends, and yes wives about playing online games (sometimes by bosses too, even at 8pm).

But now it’s official, and very very professional.

Statistics show that the average age of an online gamer is about 30-35, with 45% of these being women (not my wife, unfortunately!).

In the USA, they even have the MLG: Major League Gaming.  Think MBA, think MLB (i.e. Major League Baseball.

See their massive website (by leading US digital agency Rokkan) here:

With $20,000 winner prize money per circuit, per game type, “men” of my age are making an absolute fortune as professional gamers, and their profiles are starting the generate serious advertising dollar competition to real life sporting professionals.

Super Stars of MLG

Prize Money:

I think perhaps I might hang up my boots for the mighty Mosman AL2 Football club and create the mighty Mosman FC on the PS3 and play PES2008 semi-pro!

Are you answering the question??

You must have heard this so many times from B-school adcom members..  Many applicants often dgress from what is asked . And then while the resulting essay may be compelling in language, replete with examples and perfect in style, it often doesn’t fulfil the elementary criterion:: It doesn’t answer the question!!
This often is a result of copy-pasting answers between two similar-sounding essay prompts. And this can go undetected even after several rounds of self and peer-reviews. Especially, when you’ve digressed only a little and when the Qs are quite similar; may be sth like:: Michigan’s “Most sigifican professional accomplishment” and Yale’s “A professional accomplishment that exhibits your leadership style.”

I attended a B-school fair last year. There one of the adcoms (from Vanderbilt or HEC, Paris i remember) gave this simple magic formula. I’ve started using it; so thought of sharing it with my blogosphere friends.

When you’ve completed the essay, give it to somebody who knows you well: a friend, a colleague, your wife or anybody you deem fit for this. You may be wondering, what’s new here.. The new part comes here:: Give them only the essay, not the question.  And then, ask them  to guess the question.
If they guess the question correctly or are even close,Bingo!! you’ve been writing the  essays well. At least you’re answering the questions!!!! :-)
But in case they guess “What did you learn from a failiure?” or ”Tell us about a challenging time in your life” when the question is “Tell us about a constructive Criticism that you’ve received”, may be the forced-fitting hasn’t come out well.  The theme and the story may remain same, but perhaps you need to concentrate less on the challenge faced and more on the post failiure/challenge feedback,

Hope that helps!!

Life eej Hard?

It’s been a very long time since I wrote a blog post, let alone a meaningful one.

Have I lost interest in blogging? Have I no time? I really dunno. I’m not able to draw the line as to why exactly it’s been so.

Anyway, a lot of things have happened since then.

AUG 3rd 2008: I get hold of about 90 odd mock papers from Pavithra’s place.

AUG 4th 2008: I devise a plan of action for the next 3 weeks.

AUG 5th 2008: Implementation of the plan starts.

AUG 11th 2008: Infosys decides to call me for joining on Sept 8th 2008.

AUG 12th - AUG 24th 2008: I’m stuck in the worst dilemma of my life, so far.

AUG 14th 2008: I fill up and send the application for for MAT. There are no colleges worth applying under MAT. I’m just taking it to stay in the ‘exam mood’.

AUG 15th 2008: Landmark Quiz! yay! Going for a quiz after a really long time with LVS and Teal. We get about 21 on 40, a record high w.r.t our team.

AUG 16th  2008: The Times of India (Chennai Edition) carries a news story about the Society for Intellectual Thinking.

AUG 17th and AUG 24th 2008: A lot of new members of all ages and from all facets of society turn up for SIT meetings. Srinath and I are happy that things have finally kicked off big time!

AUG 24th 2008: I take the firm decision to set the Infosys offer aside and prepare hard for an MBA this year. A very difficult decision at this point in life for me. Also, a very difficult decision for the over-cautious and impulsive decision maker that I am. [ Of course, as always, I have the bus tickets to mysore and my Infy call letter hard copy. I can still take the offer if I want to! :P ]

Today, my typical day has a mock test from 9 - 12 AM, Sleep from 1 - 3 PM, Sectional workouts from 4 - 6 PM, TIME’s Crash Course from 6 30 - 8 30 PM, Sectional workouts from 10 30 PM - 2 AM. Finally, Sleep from 2 01 AM to about 8 AM. I squeeze in the Mock paper correction and analysis somehow somewhere in the middle.

Yours Skeptically,

uleadin

P.S. This time I’m skeptical about the fact that I won’t be able to score very well in CAT 2008. :-)

Just Call Me Ms. Bighead*

Alright, so typically I’m not the girl who think’s she awesome.

Realistically, I don’t think there’s a female in the Western World who has self esteem that high. If you have access to the media there are points in your life where you look in the mirror and think, “Wow. I wouldn’t want to shag me. Ew.” We all have those days where we can’t seem to find one single thing about ourselves attractive; and on those days our inner Crazy wants nothing more than to hide away in sweatpants and watch John and Kate Plus 8 marathons. With cookies. Lots of cookies.

Then there are those days where we feel especially pretty. For me, it’s usually when I take the extra 15 minutes to straighten my hair and put on mascara and lipstick. It also helps if my clothes match. Unfortunately I think a lot of women, myself included, never give ourselves enough credit. When I look in the mirror and like what I see, I think “I don’t look half bad,” not “Daaaamn, I’m a sexy beast!”

But while I don’t give myself a lot of credit in the appearance area, I do sometimes go a little overboard in regard to my self-perceived intelligence. One might even call me “intellectually egotistical,” at times. With the exception of the week following Lady O-to-the-Prah’s show on The World’s Smartest Children (aka: the show that’ll make you feel like a lazy, dumb fuck), for the most part I feel rather pleased with my academic accomplishments. Seriously, Oprah, the 7 year old surgeon? The 14 year old best selling author? Are you on a mission to make me cry ?

Anyway events of the past few days have made me feel like a super star. I did very well in my classes and I’ve been contacted by a few exciting organizations about promoting their products on my blog. Let’s say that again I was contacted to review things on my blog! This blog. My little ABOHO-5,000-hits-ever blog. I’m on cloud nine.

Within a matter of three days two different companies contacted me to review products. This somehow translated in my head as “I’m An Awesome Blogger and Everyone Loves Me!”

Then at the office I got a phone call from the local newspaper.

Keep in mind, I write a lot of press releases and do a lot of emailing to newspapers. So you’d think, given my position I’d immediately assume a reporter had a question about something Small Liberal University related.

But you’d be wrong.

My immediate reaction was, “Oh my gosh, I bet he reads my blog and wants to interview me!”

Um, no, crazy girl. He had a Small Liberal University question, obviously.

Time to take myself down a notch or two?

Yes. I’d say so.

*You know, circa Rocko’s Modern Life.   SPUNNKKYY!

Talent?

I am finding this job hunt business an interesting experience in how other people view me and also I guess what is important to the me in the next job I have.

I have been truly amazed at the amount of time people will give you. I mean I have meet CEO’s of some massive Hospital Networks or huge charitable organsisations and on the whole they have given me an hour or so of their time and a bunch of other contacts. I have decided that this is the best barometer of an organisation.

The other weird thing is that they keep referring to me as talent. ekk…. talk about instant pressure to perform. Plus, I can’t help but think of all of those reality TV programs where people strut their stuff only to be completely ravaged by some sort of pseudo-famous people - all in the name of discovering talent.

The MBA puts you in contact with some very bright and completely formidable people. So quite possibly my view of myself is a little bit skewed at the moment. But hey…. It has got to be a good sign to be called talent and at least I am not likely to be ravaged in front of a live studio audience!!
